On Thursday 11th of July, Channel 4 hosted a Paris 2024 Paralympic Games Launch Event. The event was to unveil Channel 4’s coverage plans, presenter line up and marketing trail at Shoreditch Electric Light Station in London, with 300 guests enjoying the entertainment throughout the evening. This was Channel 4’s most accessible and inclusive event ever, and the Involve Interpreter team were proud to be a part of it.
The event, hosted by Adam Hills, was made inclusive for all guests attending in person and online, with all presentation content featuring live BSL from our Deaf BSL Interpreter Clare, with live captions and live audio description. By providing these communication services, Channel 4 ensured the event was accessible to the Deaf community.
Our BSL Interpreting Manager, Linda Bruce said “I co–worked with Clare to interpret at the event. On this occasion, I was the supporting interpreter, there as a backup in case of any technical issues. For instance, if the autocue stopped working, I could then sign to Clare what was being spoken for her to interpret to the audience. Fortunately, this never happened, and everything went smoothly. We were present during equipment setup, rehearsals, and took plenty of time to prepare. The event was attended by many people, including some from the Deaf community such as Rose from Strictly Come Dancing, Rebecca Mansell (CEO from BDA), staff from City Lit and RNID, plus high-profile individuals from the world of TV and media. It was great to be approached by the team to make the event accessible for the Deaf community.”
Our BSL Interpreter, Clare Chilton said “It was great to interpret at this event. Channel 4 were adamant that they employed the services of a Deaf interpreter which made the day more collaborative and accessible. Many people were surprised as they hadn’t expected a Deaf interpreter to be there to translate live on the stage, so it was a good opportunity to show that Deaf people can do this type of work with the right technology, plenty of prep and the right support. I had done a few conferences before, but this was a new domain for me- I’d love to do more going forward.”
We were thrilled to be a part of this event and wish all the athletes competing in the Paralympic Games the best of luck!
