Involve Interpreter has been privileged to continue supporting essential legal services during the UK’s lockdown. Our flexible BSL interpreting services has enabled Alison, a solicitor, to deliver essential support to a Deaf couple regarding immigration issues.

Alison had been using a local Deaf service but due to social distancing, contacted Involve to see if we could interpret a call to the couple. One of our legal interpreters was able to discuss how we could manage the call with the centre and a set-up date and time for everyone to link up.

As both the couple and solicitor were in their own homes, they connected to our service through their mobile phones on 4G and Wi-Fi, and were able to see each other face-to-face via video. British Sign Language was the Deaf couple’s third language, but the experienced interpreter was able to deal with the call and the variation of signs.

A follow-up call was made to complete the application to the Home Office with the solicitor Alison joining by telephone. The interpreter and deaf couple joined via video, showing how flexible Involve Interpreter can be. This was reassuring for the couple as their application wasn’t delayed during this difficult time.

The UK lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic has placed many vital services on hold. However, with the support of Involve Interpreter, social services have been able to meet urgent needs for deaf people needing access to vital services during this time.

Using remote services has also enabled professionals, community members and sign language interpreters to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection by remaining in their homes or socially distant, using communication technology.
